Strengthening Civil Society in Uganda

Excited to be an Implementing Partner
for This 5 Year Initiative

Common Ground is pleased to announce the launch of the USAID / Uganda Civil Society Strengthening Activity to strengthen the capacity of Ugandan CSOs to influence and contribute to improved development outcomes in four thematic areas: 1) health, with particular attention paid to achieving Uganda’s HIV/AIDS’ reduction goals; 2) education, youth, and child development; 3) agriculture and food security; and 4) democracy, rights, and governance. Uganda’s civil society sector is an essential actor when it comes to providing services to citizens, monitoring public institutions, and pushing for laws, policies, and programs that address the country’s challenges.

Common Ground will serve as an implementing partner with our frequent collaborator, the East-West Management Institute (EWMI).

Our role will be to provide leadership when it comes to strengthening the advocacy capacity of Ugandan civil society organizations (CSOs) to influence national and local development. We will create and conduct appropriate baseline assessments of these CSOs; as well as design and deliver appropriate advocacy capacity-building interventions to individual and umbrella CSOs.

Moreover, we will tailor our Consulting for Consultants Academy model to recruit and train a team of outstanding local consultants who can provide the majority of capacity-building assistance to our local partners. Specifically, Common Ground will prepare these local experts to deliver mentoring, networking, peer learning, and training services.

Our team will also adapt our LEAD Model™  to create CSOs Giving Rise to Ugandan Indigenous Direction and Experience (GUIDE). GUIDE will be based upon Common Ground’s well-tested leadership model and is borne out of a servant leader paradigm. The GUIDE curriculum will combine the theory of social entrepreneurship—broadly construed as applying new and creative solutions and strategies to solve problems—with skills-building activities on delegation, situational leadership, and external communications, with constituents, CSO boards, the media, policymakers, and donors.

Over the years, Common Ground has spect more than 350 days working in Uganda and has supported several major development initiatives. We are very excited to be working once again in East Africa and can’t wait for the pandemic to abate so our travel can begin once again.

After my first time working with Craig on an MCC project in Albania, I hired him to work for my organization’s projects in Azerbaijan and Macedonia. He is truly an exceptional expert and person to work with. He delivers high quality, interesting training and mentoring that makes an impact on a wide variety of issues. Craig knows this: anytime we need his type of expertise, we go to him first, as he is truly one of the top experts that we have ever engaged.
